The Batman
07.23.2008 8:10PM
I did something rare this week. I went to the movies. Than I did something unheard of for me. I went to the movies again...to see the same movie. Thats right, on Sunday and Tuesday I saw the latest installment in the Batman series, The Dark Knight. Yes it was that good. If you haven't seen it yet, what are you waiting for?I'm not going to be spoil it for anybody, but the screen play and acting is top notch. The Dark Knight continues its re-writing of the Batman series. It may be a movie about a comic book hero, but trust when I tell you its not a comic book movie. I'm almost hoping the Nolan series ends with this one, but I know Christian Bale is contracted for a third installment. However, if the next one comes close to being as spectacular as this one, then it too will be a good movie.I picked up NCAA Football 09 for the Wii, and the Illini dynasty is off to a rosy start. After a tough opening season loss, the Illini have won 8 straight and are poised to grab a BCS berth. I'll keep you updated on the Illini's progress. Hopefully the real team can repeat last season's success.Next week I'm heading to Louisiana for a few days for some field verification. This is my first travel at this summer's job, unlike last year when I took week long excursions to Bethany Beach, San Diego, and Louisville. And its definitely an aspect I miss and will certainly look for in my first real job post graduation. That and the 25 cent cokes. Not surprisingly I haven't started my exercise routine for my ever approaching trip to Machu Picchu. Though I have started planning other aspects of the journey. I'm guessing I won't start until I'm back at school and have a more relaxed schedule.
Katrina Restored

There's few things I enjoy more than a summer project. Having been away from home for the past two summers I've had little opportunity to create anything significant. But that changed this summer and this was more than any summer project. The following was a labor of love.Three years ago Keith and I built a bar for our apartment. She was good enough for the tools we had and the purposes she would serve. She survived junior and senior year (despite the amount of alcohol that was spilled on her). Upon graduation she found a space on my parent's back porch. Where she sat, sat and sat some more. Occasionally used but mainly just a hunk of furniture taking up space on the porch. But all that's going to change now that shes been renovated, refurbished, and restored. The ugly duckling is now the prom queen. Check out the evolution of Katrina below.Katrina at "birth" and as she existed until last week:
Katrina as she exists now:
I tiled the bar tops with 8"x4" clay tiles. The upper bar top was replaced and secured with Simpson ties and bolts. I added some stained trim. The exterior sheathing was sanded and painted with Rustoleum Chalkboard Paint. As you can see, I am going to take total advantage of that. Oh yeah, and Katrina is now on wheels. At her size and weight she was nearly impossible to move, but now with the addition of 4 casters she'll go just about anywhere you need her. So stop on by and have a drink with the new and improved Katrina.
